You'll meet many new people, learn great things about yourself and your capabilities, put all of your leadership skills into action, and, best of all, make your mark on your community. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement for Girl Scouts ages 14-17. When you go for the Girl Scout Gold Award, you will design and lead a project that can make a lasting change for the better in your community. Not only will you gain a personal sense of accomplishment and benefit your community, you will also be joining a network of tens of thousands of powerful and accomplished women who have earned this honor. Youll find that colleges and universities, businesses, and your community recognizes the effort and leadership you have demonstrated. In fact, some colleges and universities offer scholarships to girls who have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award. October, 2007 Girl Scouts of the Huron Valley Council (GSHVC) and GSUSA guidelines for the Gold Award allow girls to begin work on this award when girls turn 14years old. Requirements started prior to becoming an 14-17 years old Girl Scout may NOT be applied toward this award. The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes your efforts in a wide range of Girl Scouting experiences and YOUR COMMITMENT to working to better your life and the lives of others. There are FIVE requirements for this award. You may work closely with your Leader or Consultant on your first four-(4) requirements and your Gold Award Advisor on your 5th requirement. The first four requirements call upon you to build your skills, explore career possibilities, increase your leadership skills and make a commitment to improving yourself. The first four requirements may be done in any order but must be completed BEFORE you work on the fifth requirement, which is your Girl Scout Gold Award Project. GSHVC requires completion of the first four requirements prior to submitting your Gold Award Proposal Form. If you have any questions regarding the Girl Scout Gold Award, contact the Program Services Director at (734) 971-8800 or (800) 497-2688 ext. 215 or by email at jyeager@gshvc.org Requirements for the Gold Award Requirements started BEFORE 14 years old and may NOT be used for the Gold Award. Your Gold Award project and required paperwork must be completed by Sept. 30 of the year you graduate from High School in order to receive your award. 1. Get organized: a. Attend a Girl Scout Gold Award Workshop (not required but recommended) 2. Earn the Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award. a. Earn three Interest Project Patches. b. Earn a STUDIO 2B Focus charm c. Spend 30 hours in a leadership role. d. Journal it. 3. Earn the Girl Scout Gold Career Award (40hrs). 4. Earn the Girl Scout Gold 4Bs Challenge: Become Belong Believe Build 5. Design and carry out a Girl Scout Gold Award Project of at least 65 hours. Girl Scout Gold Award Workbook for Girl Scouts of the Huron Valley Council Go For It! This Gold Award Workbook is to help you get organized and parts of it will be submitted to the Girl Scout Council. The Councils Gold Award Committee will assign you an advisor, review your workbook and help you along in the process. Step 1: GET ORGANIZED A framework is the supporting structure that you need to build so that you can do steps 2 through 7 successfully. Tips for creating a good framework: Find out if workshops are offered for girls who wish to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award. What approval process does your council have? What is the timeframe? Meet with your troop leader or advisor and develop a timeline and plan describing when and how you will earn the three awards in steps 2-4 and when youll be ready to meet with your Gold Award Advisor before starting step 5. In making your timeline, also consider when youll want to start step 5. Remember that you have lots of time. You can do steps 1-4 when you are 14-18 years old. You need to be 15-18 years old, when you do steps 5-7. Tips about the Gold Award Process: No double dipping work completed for one recognition requirement may not be applied to others. For example, the service you provide while earning a STUDIO 2B charm or Interest Project Patch cannot be applied to the hours commitment for a Community Service Bar. The Interest Project Patches and STUDIO 2B Focus Books you choose should correspond to your goals for the Gold Award and must be completed prior to submitting your Gold Award Proposal Form. It does not matter when you actually complete a particular Interest Project Patch provided you are a registered Girl Scout and be 14-18 years old. You should work closely with your troop/group advisor. Your project needs to meet an expressed need in the community. If your project involves Girl Scouts, some segment of the project should include the community outside of Girl Scouting. Your project must take a time commitment of a minimum of 65 hours. This time includes completing requirements, planning, making contacts, training others, and actual implementation of the project. The Time Log is enclosed to assist you in keeping track of the hours you spend on your project. Workbook work cannot be included in these hours. The actual project cannot begin until official notification is received from your GSHVC Gold Award Advisor. Review Safety-Wise and GSHVC guidelines on activities you can participate in as a Girl Scout. You must consult with the Fund Development Director at GSHVC before engaging in any fund raising or solicitation of materials. You may choose to engage in a collective project with other Girl Scouts, but remember each member of the team must have a distinct portion of the project. Each girl must put in a minimum of 65 hours on the project. Written documentation to this effect must be submitted with your Gold Award Report Form. Dates to Remember: Its recommended that your Gold Award Project Proposal Form be submitted 2 months prior to starting your project. That way there is time for any necessary revisions or changes so delays in getting started can be avoided. Your Final Report must be submitted no later than February 1st of the year you plan on receiving your award. The Gold Award will be presented at the Girl Scouts of the Huron Valley Council Gold Award Ceremony in the spring. Step 2: LEAD Gold Leadership Award Leadership is the spark that can ignite action and release your unique creative potential. In Girl Scouts your leadership ability is sparked by putting the Girl Scout Law into action. Four parts to earning the Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award: 1. Set the spark A. In Girl Scouts, the activities you do are based on the 4Bs, which themselves reflect the Girl Scout Law. Become: Celebrate yourself today and become your best in the future. Belong: Be part of a group where you have fun, relate to others with respect, and develop lasting friendships. Believe: Develop your ideas and voice whats important to you. Build: Take action on what you care about and make a difference. The Girl Scout Gold 4Bs Challenge gives you the opportunity to apply the 4Bs to making a difference in your community and prepares you for taking on an even bigger challenge, the Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Four steps for earning the Girl Scout Gold 4Bs Challenge: 1. BECOME: Yourself In order to become your best self, you need to set goals for your personal growth. What are your strongest skills in managing projects? Are you very organized? Good at motivating others? Excellent at getting work done in the time you have planned? Which skills need work? Giving clearer directions? Using your time more effectively? Better solving of conflicts among group members? It does not have to be an original idea, but it must have your individual mark on it. Your Gold Award Project should not be a simple service project such as collecting supplies for an organization or being a helper for an already established program. Some projects that are not considered to merit Gold Award status are blood drives, being some type of aide and collections of any kind (eye glasses, canned goods, clothing, etc.). These are projects where the planning has already been done for you. Some activities, such as a blood drive, might become part of your Gold Award Project as the scope of the project is expanded. As an example, you might put on a large-scale community health fair that includes a number of stations and one of the stations might be a blood drive. You could also decide to have people donate an old pair of eyeglasses and/or a canned food item in order for them to participate in the health fair. There can be a great deal of variety among Gold Award projects, but all successful projects will contain these five common characteristics: Vision, Passion, Longevity, Leadership and Community Impact. VISION: As a Gold Award candidate, you look at your community, see a need and try to meet that need. If your project is focused on an existing organization or program, then your project must significantly extend its work. PASSION: Find something in which you are most interested. Your project is something that should come from your heart. It is the difference between doing a project just to get it done or doing something that really is important to you. You should be sincerely involved with the project you have chosen so that it is meaningful to you and not just something to fulfill certain requirements. LONGEVITY: Gold Award projects should be ongoing in their effect or they should be able to be continued or repeated because you have trained others to carry on the work. For example, if you developed a literacy program in an area where it was really needed and had volunteers teaching children to read, think of the significant impact you have had on the lives of those children. LEADERSHIP: You must demonstrate leadership of others outside of your own family when working on your project. This needs to be done by you recruiting, managing, delegating, and collaborating with people outside of your own family. You will enlist others to help you put your plan together, but it will be your organizational skills, initiative, and guidance that make it happen. COMMUNITY IMPACT: Your project must involve others outside of Girl Scouting and should make a significant impact on your community. You must provide service to your community, school or faith-based institution. Your Gold Award Project should reach beyond the world of Girl Scouting and extend into the surrounding community. A project can involve Girl Scouts, but the major segment of the project plan must have a substantial and meaningful affect on the outlying community. One way to involve others in a project is to recruit community members as helpers and as resource people. Remember, you cannot begin working on your project until your assigned Gold Award Advisor approves your plan. You must, however, do some planning before you submit your Gold Award Application. This shows that you have a plan of action, have made contacts with the participating organization and can show the need for your project.
